What is Hangul?

Hangul (한글) is the Korean alphabet. It was created in 1443 by King Sejong the Great and is considered one of the easiest writing systems in the world to learn.

How Korean Syllable Blocks Work

Unlike English, Korean letters are grouped together into square-shaped blocks. Each block represents one syllable, not one word.

The consonant ㄱ and the vowel ㅏ combine to form:

Notice that the letters are not written next to each other. They become one square block. That’s why Korean looks different from English.
